Canada a parasite for keeping drug prices low, says U.S. senator

WASHINGTON - An American legislator called Canada "parasitic" on Wednesday for siphoning U.S. dollars to Canada with low prescription drug prices while his country does "all the innovation."

Canada benefits financially from America's role as a world leader in medical advances, Republican Sen. Bob Corker charged in an exchange with a Liberal MP as she testified before a U.S. Senate committee.

"One of the things that has troubled me greatly about our system is the fact that we pay more for pharmaceuticals and devices than other countries, and yet it's not really our country so much that's the problem, it's the parasitic relationship that Canada and France and other countries have towards us," the Tennessee lawmaker told Carolyn Bennett.

This is part of a story on www.yahoo.ca and the rest can be read at: http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/capress/090930/health/health_us_cda_health_canadians_1

Those who run our governments really know how to push the envelope. Whatever happened to the ideals of democracy? Is it right to say that Canada is 'parasitic' or is it the 'predatory' nature of the American health care system that is driving her citizens to patronize cheaper alternatives in Canada. Water always tends to find its level. So when it comes to economic indices, I guess price coupled with the forces of supply and demand rules. The Canadian government does not necesarily regulate the price of generic prescription drugs so as to keep them low, making Senator Bob Corker's accusations totally unrealistic.

Canada cannot be blamed for the overly extreme profit motivation of the American Pharmaceutical industrial complex. What the good Senstor should be doing is fighting for reforms in his own backyard rather than pointing an accusing finger at a friendly neighbour whose action is benefitting hundreds if not millions of Americans. Which is why four fingers are pointing back at him.

2009 Halloween Costume ideas

It is that time of year again. That is when the ghouls, goblins, ghosts and all other netherworld denizens are let loose upon us,looking for their treats and the occasional tricks of course.

Outside of the revelry, candy swapping and several impromptu parades that marks the celebration of Halloween is the less known positive effects of expectation that comes with it and all the other celebratory occasions on our calendar. Halloween is not a holiday, although perhaps it should be, but like any other celebration, such as Christmas, new year or easter, it sets the stage for another opportunity to have some unadulterated fun for kids and adults alike. Unlike the other holidays, Halloween seems to bring the community out making everyone a participant.

Halloween may be of European extraction, but being partly a celebration of a bounty harvest, it has its equivalent in most countries. These holidays create an expectation of hope which is very good for the psyche and therefore health and wellness of all those who participate in it. It comes only once a year, just like all other holidays and so there is no excuse for not going out and have some fun.

Costumes are the mark of Halloween and they are out there in all forms and shapes. One that I found really interesting and that should honour the memory of Michael Jackson is the Wacko Jacko Mask from Fright Catalog website.

However if you would rather make your own costumes at home, and get some interesting recipes and ideas for Halloween, then you might be interested in this Halloween ideas ebook. You can get ideas to construct a theme park for trick and treating neighbors to admire and make yourself the talk of the town.

Remember, it is a once a year event, so let us go out and have some serious fun.

Do Black People Get Sunburnt

This sounds like a very interesting, almost cheeky question, but nonetheless a very good one for a debate. I was born in the southern part of my country in the west coast of Africa, but raised mostly in the north where temperatures veered into the 40 degrees centigrade levels under a clear cloudless sky most of the time. Did I get sun burnt? I cannot say that I did because either I had no idea what it meant to be sun burnt because we were too busy trying to make a living, or perhaps I was, but did not recognize the fact that I had been sun burnt. With so many other things to worry about like diseases, hunger, overbearing parents, endless supply of mosquitoes, scorpions running around looking for a soft spot on your body to stick their stingers, no one has the luxury of bothering about being sun burnt. As a matter of fact, we were encouraged to stay in the sunlight as much as possible because they said we get a lot of vitamin D from it.

If getting sun burnt is having several dark patches on your skin, then no, I never got sun burnt, and at no time did I ever applied any kind of sun tan or UV ray protection lotion on my skin. On the other hand if being sun burnt is that tingling burning sensation you have all over your skin that makes it feel like you are about to burst into flames, then maybe I did get sun burnt. Like I said before however, for us, it is part of living.

Stink Bugs - How To Control Stink Bugs

Aphids are small, soft-bodied, pear-shaped insects that have long antennae and a characteristic pair of cornicles (short tubes) extending on either side of their abdomen. Their translucent bodies are most usually green, red, brown, yellow or white.

Aphids are common garden pests. These tiny creatures are represented by hundreds of species and almost as many colours.

Aphids have an unusual life cycle. In the spring, hibernated eggs hatch into females that give birth to 10 or more live female young per day. This allows a colony of aphids to grow very quickly, especially indoors. In the fall the males are born and the fertilized females produce eggs for hibernating outdoors. These shiny black eggs are tucked into the crevices of bark and bud scales. Winged adults are produced only when the colony must migrate, such as when the colony is overcrowded or the climate is unfavorable.

Enrollment At The LOST University Is Almost Here

An Airplane has just crashed on the shores of an unknown island. Most of the crew and passengers are dead, living just 48 survivors, most of who are incapacitated. There is no means of communicating with the outside world, and there are no signs of intelligent life in the immediate vicinity. The survivors are all alone. In other words, they are LOST.

This is a familiar theme and of the same genre as Lost In Space, X-files, The Star Trek series and several others that seem to try and use isolated fictional events to highlight real life issues like what are we, where do we come from, where are we going and what is the meaning of life.

If these questions bother you, well LOST has some of the answers you seek at its newly opened LOST University @ http://www.lostuniversity.org/ and is accepting new students with the first classes starting in December 8 2009.

First four courses on the catalog are History 101 which looks at ancient writings on walls, Language 101 which will teach you about foreign and perhaps exotic languages, Philosophy 101 – “I’m lost, therefore I am.” And Physics 101 – Introductory Physics of Time Travel.

So if you feel LOST in any way, realize that you are not alone. If you want to do something about it, then enroll at the LOST University for a heavy dose of enlightenment.
